Oxfam is the lead organisation for the Dutch MFA-funded “Somalia Joint Response” (SOMJR under the “Dutch Relief Alliance” – an NGO Alliance), a consortium consisting of currently 4 INGOs and 8 LNGOs, with a presence in Somaliland, Puntland and South Central Somalia. Since 2019, the SOMJR is delivering a multisectoral integrated humanitarian response, focusing on the following sectors: Nutrition, WASH, Health, Food Security and Livelihoods, Protection. Cash transfers play an important role throughout the response. Beneficiaries of our actions are IDPs, agro-pastoralist and pastoralist communities living in IPC 3/at risk of IPC4 areas, many of them in remote hard to reach areas, with limited access to basic services.

The SOMJR integrates the DRA’s strategic objectives: 1) more accountable humanitarian action, 2) innovation and learning, 3) collaboration for effective responses, 4) more effectively supporting locally led responses. Accountability and localisation are the key objectives and drivers of the consortium, and considerable budget and resources have been allocated to support joint initiatives in these areas.

Objectives of the training :

Oxfam is looking for experienced consultant to conduct virtual writing training  to equip and support staff to enhance their writing skills, with a specific focus on writing impact stories , case  studies and capturing the consortium intervention – impact to the community in various sectors-  from ongoing or implemented project activities.  The training targets one staff from organization’s communication department  and one program staff directly involved in SOMJR project.

In addition, the consultant is expected to provide follow-up coaching and individualized writing and editing support to SMJR consortium staff after the training.  The consultant will coach , review, and edit -written products-  that will be ready for publishing for each organization.

In addition the training aims to equip the participant with skills to  -write impact stories. Following are also training objectives:

  • Conduct writing workshop for Somali Joint Response Consortium staff of the member  and partner organizations.
  • Establishing the purpose and intended readership of written products and ensuring that the writing style is appropriate.
  • Overview of inductive (traditional) writing style Verses deductive (professional/ contemporary) writing styles.
  • Improving presentation and wording so that text is easy to read and understand. Support in editing, modifying writing style and structure.
  • Ensuring key messages from written materials can be used on social media (typically Twitter and Facebook).
  • Ensuring references are cited correctly and checking facts and statistics for accuracy, while questioning potential errors.
  • Ensuring grammar, punctuation and spelling are of the highest standard, teaching staff/writers when to eliminate abbreviations where appropriate and use acronyms sparingly and whys of monitoring paragraph length.
  • Checking overall structure and relevance of the written product and using definitions when applicable.
  • Rewriting long and complicated sentences. Proposing an excellent layout to improve readership and persuasion.
  • Provide mentoring feedback to consortium staff/writers written products by email/skype/ Zoom/or teams  to support and build their writing skills.

Training deliverables:

  • Coaching and editing support to 20 staff/writers.
  • Supporting staff/writers to finalize pieces for publication (continuous coaching after the in class training)
  • Ensuring publication of approximately 15 high quality written products.
  • Consultancy and training

Time frame:

  • The training workshop days and after training coaching with editing support will last for 15 days. The assignment planned to start during November 2021.


  • Familiar with /knowledge of working in the humanitarian sector and writing humanitarian impact/communication products.
  • Experience with conducting writing skills training courses.
  • Familiar with /knowledge of working in a Somali context will be considered an advantage.

Qualified consultants -individual or institutional consultants- are invited to submit a proposal (in English) that includes the following:

  • CV and cover letter, outlining experience in writing trainings with editing and coaching services/skills.
  • Workplan and draft course outline including a summary of the content areas to be covered and daily program of activities.
  • Detailed reference list indicating the scope and magnitude of similar assignments.
  • Registration and other relevant statutory documents required for the institutional consultants.
  • The financial proposal in USD clearly showing the budgeted cost of the work to be conducted (to be submitted in a separate document from the technical proposal) including 6% Somaliland Government tax for local consultant and 12% for the international consultant.
