 BACKGROUND DETAILS:

Taakulo Somaliland Community,commonly known by the acronym “TAAKULO”. TAAKULO is a multifaceted non-governmental, non-profit making, non-political and non-partisan development and humanitarian aid organization established in 2007 and headquartered in Hargeisa, Somaliland. Taakulo is a Somali word meaning “helping/aiding”. TAAKULO is dedicated to helping the disadvantaged people and communities throughout Somaliland by engaging in the development and related activities while providing relief support and assistance, facilitating and promoting participatory local community activities and programs that emphasize human dignity and self-reliance.

JOB OVERVIEW

The CommunicationOfficer will provide support in the visibility and media activities of the organization. She/he will perform all aspects of media relations, event coordination, designing and production visibility materials and reporting. The Communications Officer is expected to take lead in managing the cooperate website and social media platforms.  

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND ROLES.   

  1. Media and Communications
  • Manage and lead all media communications activities of the organization in line with the media strategy.
  • Produce high-quality media materials including human interest stories for web posting, print and external publication in a timely manner.
  • Produce case studies of people affected by the emergency and those supported byTaakulo, articles on the changing situation and impact of TAAKULO’s work, regular/daily blogs of first-hand accounts for use on TAAKULO and other websites, and articles and briefings on important themes emerging from the situation with key messaging suggestions backed by relevant details.
  • To make contact with journalists based in/out the country and to inform them about TAAKULO’s work and to maximize on any proactive media opportunities.
  • To provide training and support to selected field-based staff to enable them how to make stories, to take outstanding pictures, to carry out interviews with the media and to produce media materials suitable for use by TAAKULO and its Partners.
  • Provide support to regional office in the communication and media related activities across all projects. .
  • To promote organization’s work through social media, Instagram, LinkedIn Twitter, flicker, web page and Facebook.
  • To keep posting social media for TAAKULO’s activities on a daily basis.
  • To work according to TAAKULO’s ethical guidelines and policies.
  • Responsible TAAKULO’s public face through writing press releases, articles, and regular updating for the website, particularly related to emergency news and developments and advocacy campaigns
  • Edit case studies and other information, media and marketing material from the field, upload it onto the internal communication system and archiving system
  • Close work with the colleagues managing projects in order to get daily updates on progress while making sure key items/messages are communicated through the cooperate social media handles.
  • To monitor Somaliland Media and other communication hubs for benefitting TAAKULO interventions.
  • And any other business assigned by the supervisor.
  1. Visibility Activities:
  • Prepare visibility plans in coordination with project team members.
  • Coordinate visibility related activities with concerned staff of the project teams as and when required.
  • Lead in the design and development of onsite visibility materials such as project banners signboards plaques project plates photographs stickers and so on.
  • Lead the planning coordination and development of offsite visibility materials including TV radio and press campaign project brochures posters documentary films photo exhibitions and so on.
  • Work closely with the project team to publish project newsletters.
  • Assist field staff in distributing visibility materials in target communities for different projects.
  1. Documentation and Reporting:
  • Document and Maintain visual records of different stages of all projects in order to track the progress and evaluate the impact at the end of the projects.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • At least a Bachelor degree in Social Science, mass media communication, Development studies or a field relevant to this assignment.
  • Excellent understanding of the Somali humanitarian context.
  • Demonstrated excellent command of spoken and written English and Somali.
  • Proven facilitation, analytical for report writing skills, success stories and snapshots;
  • Proven interpersonal and diplomatic skills; and
  • Proven conflict sensitivity and understanding of Humanitarian programming.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience working in Communication and Media;
  • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach teams.
  • Proven experience in fieldwork for Videodocumentary.
